Movie Directors from Hell

Consider the following film directors: Gurinder Chaddha, Mira Nair, Deepa Mehta.

What do they have in common?
They are all so-called international film makers of indian origin, who make films usually based on india, women and things woven around them. All of them have obtained some amount of international acclaim (at least portrayed so in indian media). And they are not based in India.

These are all directors whose movies pretend to be showcasing various hues indian culture and are basically made-for-western-audiences. They are not real movies in that sense, most of them are made hoping for international awards, and accolades.

They are creative...Sure!
Take some examples of the movies made by these directors: Bride and Prejudice, Kamasutra, Monsoon Wedding, Water, Bend it Like Beckham - all have india/indians as a theme, woven with a storyline - in most cases a very unrealistic one - things with which indian audiences cannot relate (consider Monsoon Wedding for eg: - several sequences in the movie are totally alien to an average indian! And the movie is made around an indian wedding ..!). So much for creativity.

Yes movie directors.. can take liberty of making whatever crap they want. But, unfortunately they are often lapped up by western audiences as if these represent real india (well... woman director, that too from india - .. now how much more exotic can you get !).. not even close. These are badly made movies (watch Bride and Prejudice to convince yourself !), deserving no attention, much less any international reward.

It is almost as if, these directors from hell, are playing to the gallery; and making movies to garner awards, and no other real purpose.

If an Indian directoar makes a movie tailored to Western audiences, does that automatically make them bad movies? Not being an Indian, I certainly don't think so .. if you look at a movie like "Mississippi Masala" or "Bend It Like Beckham," none of which won any major awards that I know of but were solidly entertaining, I'd certainly call those two good flicks

Ashish

First I want to know what exactly secen you mean by this

"(consider Monsoon Wedding for eg: - several sequences in the movie are totally alien to an average indian! And the movie is made around an indian wedding ..!)."

I had seen that movie belive me or not that sort of things happen in India, its up to us belive it or leave it. But it does happen.

Second Bend It Like Beckham is about a movie of girl who wants to play football, but her parent who are from dont like this idea that girl should be playing mens game, and its true, people from India do got double standard of minds. If boy does he is right if girl does its nto correct.

Water has been nominated for Oscar from canada, why not form India? Water was supposed to shoot in India but some political parties didnt want to becuase it can harm their politcal agenda. Rubbish what wrong in showing right things. Well Ashaih come back with points from their we will take discussion. Good Post..

Yes there are some exceptions, but largely these are 'seeking-awards' movies. If you see these movies: Bride and Prejudice, Fire, Kamasutra - you would wonder - what was all this commotion about - they are worse than C grade movies both in content and quality.

Dear Apun:) Wow I like the title Real Fanatic..

Mate Fire I had seen it, and be honest mate do you think their is no lesbians in India? Its just reality might be we dont considered this movies as good taste becuase anyway its showing reality, but we have to accept it. It is happeneing , it has happened. Look around mate and I am sure you will find out. When husband is too busy in making money then wife might turn to some one else to satify her..

Second Kamasutra is based on book, Been to Amesterdam? If not then I would suggest you to go... there is a big museum about sex life. There is very good explaination of Kamasutra and its book.

Bride and Prejudice I havent seen it but I will see then I will comment on it.

Common is sex, but end of the day Apun its part of our life. Take it or leave it..but Sex is part of life for any sucessful marriage. I dont say sex is life, but sex is a part of life. We need to grow and see the things in different prespective.

These directors belong to that club which thinks that international recognition will come easily when they paint Indian culture in a bad light. 'Abuse your parents and your neighbour will pat you on the back'is the mantra of their profession.
